Why We Are
When I began to think about branching out on my own, I had to find a way to stand out. I’ve had many experiences in several different fields of Physical Therapy, and I know the landscape. Anyone who has looked at my site, talked to me or understands the nature of concierge Physical Therapy might be thinking “There’s no better way to stand out than to ask for cash payment when literally NO ONE else does.” While that notion isn’t strictly true, it certainly is a memorable feature, but not in a good way for many people. However, I would like to take this opportunity to explain why it is good, and I believe better, than the traditional mode in which Physical Therapy is delivered.
#1. Cash-based Physical Therapy allows for direct access to a Physical Therapist. Direct access means that you do not need to see a doctor, get imaging or be referred to a specialist before being referred to a Physical Therapist. You may go and see a Physical Therapist in the state of Arkansas without a referral from a Physician and receive high-quality Physical Therapy interventions. This results not only in less time spent trying to get the therapy you probably already know you need, but also saves money on multiple doctor office visits and imaging(X-ray, MRI, CT) that is often unnecessary.
#2. Cash-based Physical Therapy allows you to have more time with a Physical Therapist than a traditional insurance-based clinic. This is not totally universal, but even in private practice it is quite prevalent for a Physical Therapist to have 2-4 clients an hour that he or she must be treating and supervising. This amounts to only 15-30 minutes of a client’s time with the one individual that can adapt and adjust any part of the plan of care at any time that an adjustment is required. With our model, every client gets the entire time of the booked session with the Physical Therapist, because that is how we would want to be treated.
#3. In many cases, cash-based Physical Therapy can actually save you money over a traditional insurance-based clinic, particularly if you have a high deductible. Many insurance plans offer no coverage of therapy bills until your deductible is met. This means you will pay the full bill out-of-pocket until the deductible is met. A conservative estimate of 2x/wk for 4 weeks would be $536 at $67/visit and a more realistic estimate would be 3x/wk for 6-12 weeks at $91/visit resulting in a range of $1638 - $3276. In all but the most conservative estimates, it is cheaper to go with our cash-based Physical Therapy model.
The nice thing about paying cash for something is that you know what the value of that thing is, you have paid for it, and you don’t have a bill coming later. That is, in part, why we provide a Good Faith Estimate for all services, so you know what the cost is and there are no surprises later on.
So why would I start a cash-based Physical Therapy practice, and why is it a better choice for PT services vs using insurance in many cases?
